Is CCS Faster Than Type 2?

CCS charging is generally much faster than Type 2 AC charging. The main difference is the way the two charging systems deliver power to your electric vehicle. CCS uses DC (Direct Current) rapid charging, which delivers electricity directly to the vehicle's battery. This allows compatible CCS rapid charging stations to provide significantly higher power levels than standard AC charging, making them perfect when you need to add a large amount of range in a short period of time.
Type 2 charging uses AC (Alternating Current). The vehicle's onboard charger converts the AC electricity into DC before it is stored in the battery. The charging speed is therefore typically lower than a dedicated CCS rapid charger, although the exact speed depends on your vehicle, charger and electrical supply.
However, faster doesn't always mean more convenient. CCS rapid charging is primarily intended for public charging and longer journeys. You need to locate a compatible rapid charging station, and at busy times you may have to wait for a charger to become available. Rapid charging can also be more expensive than charging at home.
For your daily EV charging, a Type 2 portable charger can be a much more practical option. If your vehicle has a compatible CCS Type 2 inlet, the charger connects to the Type 2 AC section at the top of the inlet, allowing you to charge at home, at work or while travelling without needing to find a dedicated rapid charging station.
